The University of Munich or Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) is offering a 2 years Master of Psychology: Clinical Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience program. 

The master’s degree provides training in the field of clinical psychology in the broader sense (including psychosomatics, neuropsychology, rehabilitation psychology, gerontopsychology) in research and practice. The activity in the institutional area as well as in own practice is conceivable. The master’s course gives all graduates access to psychotherapist training. This has meanwhile become indispensable for activities in the clinical-psychological area.

In the master's degree in "Clinical Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience", knowledge and skills are imparted that qualify for a broad spectrum of psychological fields of activity in research, counseling centers, clinics, and psychological services. The master’s course is designed in such a way that the (current) entry requirements for psychotherapist training are met.

Interdisciplinary students should be taught how to overlook and critically assess (psychological) relationships and to apply scientific methods and findings independently. The students should be given in-depth specialist knowledge in the areas of clinical psychology, clinical neuropsychology, and neurocognitive psychology, which enable them to work independently in these areas according to scientific principles and to apply scientific methods and findings.

Admission Requirements

Prerequisites for admission to the Master’s degree in Psychology: Clinical Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience, in addition to a first professional university degree or an equivalent degree from Germany or abroad in a degree course of at least six semesters in the field of psychology or a closely related subject, proof of special qualitative requirements for this degree program. Applicants whose qualifications have been determined take part in a local selection process. 

It is possible to withdraw from the current sixth semester of a B.Sc. in psychology. In this case, however, the prerequisite is that at least 140 ECTS points have been acquired at the time of application.

This also means that graduates without a major in psychology cannot apply.

Language Requirements

Apart from individual events, the course is held in German. Most of the specialist literature is written in English; In addition, participation in relevant specialist conferences requires written and spoken English language skills.

English Language

Requirements for applying for the M. Sc. In Psychology: Clinical Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience, the command of the English language are at least on the B2 level of the European comparison framework.

The following test formats (but also others) are recognized as proof of B2:

  • TOEFL Internet-based: a minimum score of 87
  • TOEFL computer-based: a minimum score of 227
  • TOEFL paper-based: a minimum score of 567
  • Cambridge IELTS: a minimum score of 5.0
  • Cambridge FCE: Passed
  • Cambridge BCE Vantage: Passed
  • Business Language Testing Service (BULATS): a minimum score of 60
  • Pearson Test of English General: Level 3
  • Pearson Test of English Academic: a minimum score of 59
  • Michigan ECCE Exam: Passed

German Language

In accordance with the enrollment, re-registration, and de-registration statutes of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München of June 28, 2006, foreign and stateless applicants must provide proof of German. Knowledge of German must be proven with one of the following documents:

  • Graduation certificate from a German higher educational institution (at least at the level of a grammar school, a technical college, university)
  • Certificate of passing the German language test for the university entrance of foreign applicants at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (DSH 2).
  • the Goethe Certificate C2: GDS of the Goethe Institute 
  • the small/large language diploma or ZOP of the Goethe-Institut 
  • Language certificate from the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Federal States, Level II (4x C1)
  • German language test II of the Language and Interpreter Institute, Munich
  • Test German as a foreign language with level 4 in all 4 sub-skills. If a level with less than 4 points is passed, the test cannot be accepted.

Course Structure

The M. Sc. "Psychology: Clinical Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience" is a scientifically sound consecutive course that focuses on the more research-oriented application of the subject.

A total of 120 ECTS points must be acquired over the course of four semesters. These are divided into modules into the following subject blocks.
