The University of Melbourne is offering a 2- year master’s program in Information Systems. A degree for aspiring and current practitioners and consultants in digital business: professionals supporting, managing, and changing business processes through information and communications technology, and information systems.

Program Overview

Specializations

Students registered at the Master of Information Systems (MIS) program choose between one of three specializations:

  • The MIS Professional Specialization has advanced coursework for careers in IT management and digital business.
  • The MIS Health Specialization has advanced coursework focusing on the use of IT to process health information for purposes including improved individual health, healthcare service provision, public health, and biomedical research, prevention of clinical errors, reduced healthcare costs, and effective population health management.
  • The MIS Research Specialization combines coursework in IT management and digital business with a strong grounding for undertaking research in that context.

Program Topics

Students will upskill themselves for a dynamic career in IT management and digital business. As they will explore topics such as:

  • database systems, 
  • organizational processes, 
  • app development, 
  • consulting, 
  • business analysis, 
  • emerging technologies, and 
  • IT strategy and governance.

Learning Outcomes

A graduate of the MIS should:

  • Have developed a sound knowledge and understanding of the discipline of Information Systems.
  • Have acquired skills that will enable them to manage and change business processes through information and communications technology (ICT) and information systems.
  • Have a broad business and real-world perspective together with experience in applying business communication, interpersonal, and team skills to real situations.
  • Have developed and demonstrated critical thinking and analytical skills to apply information system theory to ICT management practice.
  • Have gained professional practice knowledge within the real world of IT Management through the industry links of staff teaching in the program.
  • Have developed skills and had experience in communication of ICT issues to justify, critically evaluate and explain real-world situations leading to IT management decisions.
  • Be able to demonstrate an understanding of professional codes of conduct and ethical standards.
  • Have advanced knowledge of research principles and methods in Information Systems.

Admission Requirements

Work Experience

The Master of Information Systems is a two-year (200 point) full-time program. Depending on the number of years of work experience and the applicants’ undergraduate qualification, they may be eligible for credit to the course to reduce it to either an 18 month (150 points) or 12 months (100 points) full-time program. 

200 point program

This degree is for students without work experience.

To be considered for entry, applicants must have completed:

  • An undergraduate degree in any discipline, with a weighted average mark of at least H3 (65%), or equivalent.

150 point program

Up to 50 points of credit may be awarded to applicants who have (exact subjects credited depending on the background and experience)

Option 1
  • An undergraduate degree in any discipline
  • With a weighted average mark of at least H3 (65%), or equivalent
  • And at least one year documented relevant work experience
Option 2
  • A Graduate Certificate in Information Systems 
  • With a weighted average mark of at least H3 (65%), or equivalent

100 point program

Up to 100 points of credit may be awarded to applicants who have (exact subjects credited depending on the background and experience)

Option 1
  • An undergraduate degree in Information Systems 
  • With a weighted average mark of at least H3 (65%), or equivalent 
  • And two years of documented relevant work experience
Option 2
  • A four-year Honours degree in Information Systems 
  • With a weighted average mark of at least H3 (65%), or equivalent 
Option 3
  • An undergraduate degree in any discipline
  • With a weighted average mark of at least H3 (65%), or equivalent 
  • And at least one year of documented relevant work experience
  • And an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Information Systems with a weighted average mark of at least H3 (65%), or equivalent 
Option 4
  • An undergraduate degree in any discipline
  • With a weighted average mark of at least H3 (65%), or equivalent 
  • And an Advanced Graduate Diploma in Information Systems with a weighted average mark of at least H3 (65%), or equivalent

English Language Requirements

Applicants are required to satisfy the university’s English language requirements for postgraduate courses. For those applicants seeking to meet these requirements by one of the standard tests approved by the Academic Board, performance band 6.5 is required.

Course Structure

The Master of Information Systems (MIS) is a 1–2 year (depending on the student’s prior work experience and study) 200 credit point coursework degree for those interested in developing their expertise across:

  • project and change management, 
  • emerging technologies, 
  • IT strategy and governance, 
  • security, and 
  • service provision.

This four semesters Master of Information Systems program has three specializations: Professional Specialisation, Research Specialisation, and Health Specialisation. And students should take ONE specialization.

Melbourne School of Engineering scholarships are available to both domestic and international students in all engineering and IT programs. 

Between 80–100 scholarships are awarded each year, valued at USD $3,568–$14,270 per annum. These scholarship offers are made at the time of course offer.

Melbourne School of Engineering Foundation Scholarships

Melbourne School of Engineering Foundation offers up to 14 scholarships each year. 

Valued between USD $3,568–$7,135 per annum, these scholarships are offered to high-achieving domestic and international students commencing in Engineering and IT Professional Masters programs.
