About the organization
The Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research (FMI), based in Basel, Switzerland, is a world-class biomedical research institute with a twofold mission – understanding the molecular mechanisms of health and disease, and training young scientists. With an international staff of about 340, and 21 research groups, the FMI’s main areas of focus are neurobiology, quantitative biology, and epigenetics. Named after Friedrich Miescher, the Basel biochemist who discovered nucleic acids, the FMI is affiliated with the University of Basel and the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research. It is currently led by Professor Dirk Schübeler. Established in 1970, the FMI has been playing a leading role in biomedical research for over half a century.
