Homeawe Foundation is announcing a volunteer opportunity at the Costa Rica Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the most beautiful wildlife sanctuaries in the world. This opportunity will suit you if you want to invest your time meaningfully, learn about and contribute to the care of Costa Rica's exotic wildlife.
Duties & responsibilities
You will volunteer for 25 hours per week and will participate in the following activities:
- Watering plants
- Preparing food for patients and other animals.
- Rehabilitation
- Medical examination and treatment.
- Annual check-ups
- Laboratory work (fecal and blood smears).
- Feeding young and orphaned animals.
The regular volunteer program consists of the following activities:
- Your day will start at 6:00 and end at 15:00
- Morning feeding and daily tasks:
- 6:00 to 8:00 => You will start your day by feeding the animals in the morning under the supervision of experts. This is a unique opportunity to see the animals in their most active state.
- 8:00 - 8:30 => Breakfast time! Your well-deserved break to recharge your batteries.
- 8:30 - 12:00 => Participate in daily tasks.
- Lunch and relaxation time:
- 12:00 - 13:00 => Your time to have a nutritious lunch, followed by free time to use the WiFi or enjoy a refreshing nap.
- Afternoon animal feeding and free time:
- 13:00 - 15:00 => Afternoon animal feeding, again under supervision. These hours are important to maintain the routine and care of the residents.
- After afternoon animal feeding:
- Volunteers will have free time to explore the premises, rest or take part in recreational activities.
- 18:00 => Dinner is ready, the perfect time to share experiences with other volunteers and relax after a productive day.
Or you can choose the Veterinary Internship Program:
- Working days start at 7:00 and end at 16:00
- The Veterinary Internship Program was created to allow veterinary students to apply their skills in a real-world setting.
- The program aims to enable participants to take part in practical activities that directly benefit the animals.
- Your day will consist of the following activities:
- 7:00 - 8:00 => You will start your day with morning animal walks under the supervision of experts. This is a unique opportunity to see the animals in their most active state.
- 8:00 - 8:30 => Breakfast time! This is a well-deserved break to recharge your batteries.
- 8:30 - 12:00 => Taking medication and doing daily tasks.
- Lunch and relaxation time:
- 12:00 - 13:00 => Time for a nutritious lunch, followed by free time to use the WiFi or enjoy a refreshing nap.
- 13:00 - 16:00 => Afternoon animal feeding, again with supervision, lab work and a range of other tasks.
- 18:00 => Dinner is ready, a perfect time to share experiences with other volunteers and relax after a productive day.
Eligibility criteria
- You must have an intermediate level of English.
- Preferably knowledge of Spanish.
- You must be over 18 years old.
- Singles and married couples can apply for this opportunity.
- You must agree to follow the following rules.
- Do not smoke inside or outside NATUWA property.
- Do not feed animals (outside of feeding time).
- The use of flash when taking photos is prohibited.
- The use of any type of illegal drugs is prohibited.
- Alcoholic beverages are not allowed.
- Respect the staff of the reserve (sexual harassment, racism, homophobia or xenophobia will not be tolerated).
- Do not allow strangers to enter the reserve.
- No shorts are allowed.
- Follow the safety rules according to the activity (gloves, helmet, glasses, shoes and pants).
- Do not carry any electronic device during work time (cell phones and cameras).
- The use of insect repellents containing DEET is strictly prohibited.
- Program Fees:
- Regular Volunteer: $350
- Veterinary Volunteer: $490
- HomeAwe Fees:
- $550 - HomeAwe Non-Member Fee.
- $350 - HomeAwe+ Premium Membership Fee.
- $250 - HomeAwe+ Ultimate Membership Fee.
