UN Volunteers platform is offering an online volunteering opportunity  to Make edits to a world map using QGIS or similar GIS software with The Digital Learning Team of UNICEF's global education team works to ensure that UNICEF and partners reach the most marginalized and vulnerable children and young people with digital learning and skilling opportunities.

As part of UNICEF's digital learning efforts and its Gateways to Public Digital Learning initiative, UNICEF maps and monitors the status and progress of public digital learning globally.

Duration:

1-5 hours for 3 weeks

Duties & responsibilities


We are looking for an online volunteer who will support the development of a cartogram world map using QGIS (or similar software), where every country is the same size and shape. It would require some knowledge of QGIS to follow the steps required to convert an existing world map (which will be provided) to cartogram, or hex map format - see for example https://questionsindataviz.com/2017/11/05/how-do-you-tile-the-world/. The online volunteer will have the opportunity to build connections with the team in UNICEF and learn about ways in which data visualization can support the realization of UNICEF's education advocacy and programming.

Eligibility criteria

  • Required experience: Candidates should have previous experience in using QGIS or similar software to create or edit custom maps.
  • Languages: English, Level: Fluent, Desirable
