Friedrich Naumann Foundation is offering a number of scholarships for refugees to study for a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Germany. You can apply for this scholarship if you are a recognized refugee and study full-time at a state or state-recognized university in Germany for your first degree or will begin your studies in the next semester.
Benefits
- Regardless of the scholarship, all scholarship holders receive a monthly lump sum for study costs of 300.00 euros. In addition, scholarships are calculated in accordance with the guidelines of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research based on the Federal Education Promotion Act (BAFöG). In contrast to BAföG, the scholarships do not have to be repaid.
- The program also grants subsidies for studying abroad for a maximum of 12 months.
- Funding is initially granted for one year. Then you can apply for extensions every year until you graduate.
- The minimum funding period is two semesters at the time the scholarship begins. The maximum funding period depends on the standard period of study according to BaföG and ends with the last examination.
Eligibility criteria
You can apply if:
- You will soon have your (technical) high school diploma and then want to study,
- You already have your (technical) high school diploma and want to study,
- You have completed your (technical) high school diploma as well as vocational training and now want to study,
- You have already started studying,
- You are already in the master's program (but note here that the minimum funding period is 2 semesters at the time the scholarship begins).
Scholarships will not be offered for:
- Bachelor programs for foreign, non-EU students
- second degree programs, part-time programs, distance learning programs that are not full-time
- postgraduate courses and complementary studies
- studies in the final completion stage (the minimum sponsorship duration is 2 semesters)
- any kind of short-term projects (internships, language courses, travel grants, etc.)
Application Requirements:
All documents must be submitted in either German or English. Please take care of any translations on your own. Please prepare the following documents for the online application as a PDF scan. Note that the maximum upload capacity is 5MB per document category. Please scan the following documents individually:
- Curriculum vitae (max. 2 pages)
- Identification document (identity card or passport)
- Applicants from outside the EU as well as refugees please submit the pages with your personal data and visa/residence status.
- University admission/ certificate of enrollment High school graduates may deliver it later. Must be available at the time of admission to the scholarship program at the latest.
- Diploma/degree, which qualifies for the corresponding university studies (Bachelor/Master). If you don't have your high school diploma yet, please upload your most recent interim report. If you are invited to the personal interview, please bring a copy of your high school diploma with you.
- (Academic) transcripts (e.g. Table of Records, if applicable Bachelor's/Diploma certificate) Not applicable for high school graduates.
- If applicable, certificates of vocational training or professional activity.
Please note that the following letters of reference must also be provided:
- For high school graduates: 2x letters of reference from your teachers
- For freshmen (1st semester): Preferred: 2x letters of reference from your university professors/scientific employees. Or: like high school graduates.
- students(2nd semester and above): 2x letters of reference from your university professors/scientific assistants. For applications for 1st-semester Master-Program, the scholarship accepts reviews from the bachelor program.

Established in 1958 by Theodor Heuss, the first president of the Federal Republic of Germany, it promotes individual freedom and liberalism. Usually still referred to as the Friedrich Naumann Foundation, the foundation supplemented its name in 2007 with the words "for Freedom" (für die Freiheit).
