Opportunity description

International Volunteer HQ invites all self-motivated volunteers to participate in the Summer Outreach project in China. This volunteer opportunity will run during the school holidays in July and August, aiming to keep students learning. Outreach programs typically operate with students aged between 10-18, with up to 30-40 students per class and few teachers. So, you can give local teachers a hand and improve the standard of education, especially in English classes.

Duties & responsibilities

You can give local teachers a hand and improve the standard of education, especially in English classes through:

  • Helping to run the class.
  • Taking responsibility for planning and implementing lessons.
  • Most students have only a basic understanding of English so you can expect to be teaching simple words and phrases, with a focus on teaching correct pronunciation.
  • Teaching volunteer work can vary but generally includes:
  • Teaching English language classes
  • Lesson planning
  • Helping with language skills and pronunciation
  • Talking and connecting with students

Eligibility criteria

You should follow the following criteria:

  • You must be 18 years of age or older, unless you are volunteering with a friend or family member over the age of 18.
  • Volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to participate in this program and may be asked to provide additional documentation to the local team.
  • All volunteers aged 13+ are required to provide a criminal background check to IVHQ prior to departure.
  • Those aged 13-17, if unable to obtain a criminal background check, can provide two character reference letters instead.
  • All volunteers are required to have adequate volunteer travel insurance.
  • All volunteers must speak fluent English.
  • Confident, self-motivated volunteers who will thrive in an environment where English is not widely spoken.
  • Experience or TEFL training will be a big advantage but is not required.
  • Affordable fees from $335 for 1 week.

Please note: The program orientation begins on the first and third Monday of the month and volunteers need to arrive in Xi’an before 4pm on the Sunday before orientation.

You’ll have a chance to be developing personally and professionally by:

  • Improving access to quality education
