Opportunity description

Scottish Arts Trust announces a Scottish Arts Club Short Story Competition for writers with the opportunity to Win £3,000. Writers worldwide with stories of any topic up to 2,000 words can apply for this competition. The competition has come a long way since 2014 when it held the first Scottish Arts Club Short Story Competition with the first prize of £300. The first prize is now ten times higher, although the entry fee has stayed the same and It's introduced free entry for writers living in Scotland who receive any form of income support or universal credit.

Benefits

  1. The winner of the first prize will receive £3,000 and it's open to writers worldwide.
  2. The winner of the second prize will receive £500 and it's open to writers worldwide.
  3. The winner of the third prize will receive £250 and it's open to writers worldwide.
  4. The winner of the Isobel Lodge Award will receive £750 and it's open to unpublished writers living in Scotland.
  5. The winner of the Write Mango Award will receive £300 and it's open to writers worldwide.

Eligibility criteria

  • The entry fee per story equals £10.
  • Your story can be on any topic. It does not have to be about Scotland.
  • Please make sure that your story is 2000 words or fewer, excluding the title. If it is one word over the limit it will be disqualified.
  • Please make sure that your name does not appear anywhere in your story document. All judging is anonymous. Your story comes to the competition with your entry form. Both are assigned a number and there is no risk of losing track of who has sent which story.
  • Make sure your file is in .doc, .docx, or .pdf format. Judges cannot always read .pages or .odt files and will disqualify them. If you aren’t sure how to produce these formats, read the guidance notes.
  • Your story should not have been previously published, online or in print.
  • You may enter the same story in other competitions at the same time but if the story is selected for publication or a prize please inform the competition so that they may withdraw it from the competition.
  • The short story competition is open to writers worldwide.
  • The Isobel Lodge Award for unpublished writers resident in Scotland.
  • The Write Mango Award is open to writers worldwide and for stories up to 2000 words that are fun, amusing, bizarre, and/or as delicious as a mango.
  • The entry fee is £10 per story, as a donation to the organization's Charities Aid Foundation bank account. Payment can be made by credit/debit card or cheque. After successfully completing the form, you will be taken to the payment page.
  • Free entry is available for writers living in Scotland whose immediate family receives any form of income support.
