The Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung offers a partially funded fellowship in Germany to researchers of all disciplines from developing and emerging countries with above-average academic qualifications. You can get more information about:

Benefits

  • This fellowship will help you to carry out your own research in collaboration with a host at a German research institution of your choice. Hosts can apply for a subsidy for research costs.

  • The Georg Forster Research Fellowship will provide postdoctoral researchers with the opportunity to carry out their research in Germany. The monthly scholarship amount is 2,670 euros. The fellowship can last from 6 to 24 months.
  • The Georg Forster Research Fellowship will give experienced researchers the opportunity to carry out their research in Germany. The monthly scholarship amount is 3,170 euros. The fellowship can last from 6 to 18 months.
  • You will also receive personal support throughout your stay, and the opportunity to decide when you would like to start your fellowship. You and your partner will have the opportunity to attend an intensive German language course.
  • More financial support can also be provided, to cover children and family expenses, health insurance, and travel costs.
  • The Foundation will remain in contact with you even after your research residence has ended, and you may also be given the opportunity to make subsequent visits to Germany.

Eligibility criteria

You must:

  • Be a researcher with a Ph.D. degree and your research should address questions relevant to the further development of your home region, regardless of your industry.
  • For postdoctoral researchers:
  • You must have completed a Ph.D. or equivalent academic qualification within the last four years, or be completing it within six months, and can provide a written summary of your results.
  • Your research must have been published in academic journals, and reviewed according to international standards.
  • For experienced researchers:
  • You must have completed a Ph.D. - or equivalent - within the last twelve years.
  • Your academic profile should be supported by an extensive list of publications in peer-reviewed academic journals according to international standards.
  • You can apply even after 16 years of completing a master's degree or other postgraduate degree but you must provide a publication record commensurate with your level of employment, in case a Ph.D. in your field or country of origin is not possible or uncommon.
  • Your research must make a significant contribution to the further development of your home region, and you must also meet the following criteria:
  • You must be a citizen of any developing or transitional country except China and India.
  • A scholar from an academic institution of your choice in Germany will provide you with a mentoring agreement and written confirmation that the necessary research facilities are available for your research.
  • For postdocs: Your Ph.D. supervisor and another researcher outside your institution, if applicable, should provide well information about your qualifications.
  • For experienced researchers: Reviews should be submitted by significant partners and/or researchers at your own institution as well as any other institutes - outside your country of origin, if applicable.
  • You must have a good knowledge of German or English if you are applying to the field of natural sciences or engineering.
  • You must have a good knowledge of the German language if this is necessary to carry out your research successfully. Otherwise, it is sufficient to have a good knowledge of the English language, if you are going to apply to the field of humanities, social sciences, or medicine.
  • You must adhere to the Good Scientific Practice (PDF) and principles of scientific ethics.
  • You can not apply for a Georg Forster Research Fellowship if you have already received sponsorship from the Humboldt Foundation, but in that case, you may apply to one of the Foundation's graduate programs.
