Opportunity description
Qatar Museums Foundation announces the exhibition “Between a Look and a Look: Gérôme, Art and Influence” in Qatar. This thought-provoking exhibition examines the art and legacy of French painter and sculptor Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904). It explores the role of his work in and influence on the Orientalist art movement, through photography and comparison with modern and contemporary artworks from West Asia, North Africa and Central Asia.
Benefits
- The exhibition “Between a Look and a Look: Gérôme, Art and Trace” features nearly 400 works, including a wide selection from the Lusail Museum’s Orientalist Art Collection, including European paintings of the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia spanning the 16th to 19th centuries. The exhibition also features important loans from Qatar Public Museums and prestigious international institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Islamic Arts Museum in Malaysia, as well as new commissions from artists including Babi Badalov (b. 1959, Azerbaijan) and Nadia Kaabi Lenki (b. 1978, Tunisia) to offer new interpretations of Gérôme in the 21st century.
- Gérôme is one of the most commercially successful European artists of the 19th century, and was known in his time as a painter who addressed history in his works, as well as a visual storyteller, bringing the worlds of ancient Greece and Rome to life. But it was his role as a chronicler of the modern cultures and peoples of North Africa and the Middle East that made him so influential. His many travels to Egypt and Turkey and his many stops in the region between 1855 and 1880 allowed him to produce some of the most enduring images and themes of Orientalist art. His paintings, marked by their stunning imagination and meticulous naturalism, played a major role in defining the world of the Middle East and North Africa for Europe, America and Britain. Since 1978, his work has been the subject of critical scrutiny by art historians, including Linda Nochlin, who is known for reading his paintings within the context of a deeper and more brutal colonial agenda. The exhibition “Between a Look and a Look: Gérôme, Art and Effect” offers new interpretations of the artist in its widest range, without neglecting the contributions of these specialists, or Edward Said’s groundbreaking book, Orientalism.
- The exhibition is curated by Emily Weeks, Guest Curator at Lusail Museum, Giles Hudson, Curator of Photography at Lusail Museum, and Sara Reda, Guest Curator at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, and is part of the legacy of the Qatar-France 2020 Year of Culture, a year-long program of collaborations between institutions in both countries.
- The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue containing new research on the artist and essays on his influence, by the curators as well as Christine Belter, an Orientalist and Professor of Art History at the Marc Bloch University in Strasbourg.
