Mercatus Center offers a number of partially funded fellowship opportunities to early-career scholars who have recently graduated from their doctoral programs; James Buchanan Fellowship. This is a one-year, competitive fellowship program awarded to scholars in any discipline to encourage them to critically engage ideas in the political economy.
Benefits
If you get this fellowship, you will have an award of up to $10,000 which includes:
- A stipend.
- All required reading materials.
- Travel and lodging to attend colloquia hosted by the Mercatus Center.

Eligibility criteria
In order to be accepted into the James Buchanan Fellowship program, you must:
- Have graduated within the last five years from a doctoral program.
- Have an academic position at an accredited university and/or a research position with an organization dedicated to in-depth research in social sciences and other sciences.
- Able to commit to traveling two weekends for in-person colloquia and three two-day virtual colloquia during the upcoming calendar year.
- Have research and/or teaching interests that would benefit from a greater understanding of key writings in political economy.
Please note:
- The year of participation in the fellowship program begins in January of each year and concludes in December of each year.
- Scholars who were awarded a James Buchanan Fellowship are eligible re-apply to the fellowship every year until the fourth year after their graduation from a PhD program.
