The Horowitz Foundation announces a series of doctoral grants in the United States, which aim to:
- Support emerging researchers through a series of small grants.
- Promote scholarship in the application of social policy.
- Encourage projects that address contemporary issues in the field of social sciences.
Benefits
- Grants are based solely on the merit of the applicants. Each award is worth $10,000; $7,500 is awarded at the beginning of the project and $2,500 upon completion of the project.
- To be eligible for the second award, applicants must provide evidence of one of the following:
- Have their dissertation accepted and approved.
- Have their research article accepted by a peer-reviewed journal.
- Have been invited to write and publish a chapter in a book.
- These awards are non-renewable and will be available to successful applicants for five years from the date of the award announcement to complete their project and claim their final award.
- The Trustees provide cash award for the two most outstanding projects. You can't apply for these awards directly as they are awarded at the sole discretion of the Trustees. The two awards are:
- Irving Louis Horowitz Award:
- This award is given to the most outstanding project overall.
- This award is worth an additional $5,000.
- Trustees Award:
- This award is given to the most innovative approach in theory and/or methodology.
- This award is valued at an additional $3,000.

Eligibility criteria
- You must be a current PhD candidate (or PhD in Public Health) working on your dissertation.
- You must not have a PhD.
- Applicants may be from any country or university worldwide. No U.S. citizenship or residency is required.
- The Foundation supports projects that have social policy implications at the global or local level.
- Applications are evaluated based on the Trustees’ assessment of criteria such as feasibility, application, originality, methodology, theoretically or empirically rich research, and letters of recommendation.
- The grant is awarded to individuals, not institutions.
- Recipients of the grant must acknowledge the assistance provided by the Foundation in any publication of their research and must notify the Foundation of publication details.
- Award is issued upon receipt of a letter of acceptance from the recipient.
- You will be responsible for ensuring that the grant does not conflict with other funding opportunities you have received.
- Recipients will be announced on the Foundation’s website, in appropriate professional media outlets, and by issuing a press release to the university’s media offices.
About Horowitz Foundation for Social Policy:
The Horowitz Foundation for Social Policy was established in 1997 by Irving Louis Horowitz and Mary Curtis Horowitz and has been funded by contributions from them since its inception. The Foundation received approval as a not-for-profit 501 (c)(3) organization in 1998. The Foundation's general purpose is to support the advancement of research and understanding in the major fields of the social sciences. Its specific purpose is to provide small grants to aspiring PhD students at the dissertation level to support the research they are undertaking for their project.
