Opportunity description

Commissions for Developing Countries announces the opportunity of the IMU Breakout Graduate Fellowships, which are awarded to a limited number of excellent students from developing countries. It invites professional mathematicians to nominate highly motivated and mathematically talented students from developing countries who plan to complete a doctoral degree in a developing country, including their own home country. This fellowship aims to help educate the next generation of mathematicians and hopefully results in extended benefits to the home countries of those chosen for the fellowships.

Benefits

If you have been joined to this fellowship, you will get:

  1. The fellowship can cover the entire period of the doctoral program up to four years.
  2.  The grant value up to a maximum of USD 10.000 per year to cover the following:
  • Full tuition fee.
  • Accommodation expenses.
  • Travel expenses to the host institution (if different from the home country).
  • Basic living expenses.

Eligibility criteria

You should follow the following conditions:

  • For the Professional Mathematician:
  • Professional mathematicians including those who have superannuated, but continue to mentor young students.
  • It is preferable that the nominator has been mentoring the nominee.
  • For the Student, you must be:
  • resident and a citizen of a developing country.
  • pre-accepted to join a doctoral program in the first academic year after the time of selection in a university or research institution which is based in a developing country.
  • Or already be enrolled in a doctoral program in a university or research institution which is based in a developing country.
  • have a consistently good academic record and must be seriously interested in pursuing a career of research and teaching in mathematics. 
  • Both nominations and accompanying documentation must be submitted in English only and uploaded materials in PDF format.
  • If the documentation furnished were incomplete the entry would not be accepted for consideration.
  • The fellowship is incompatible with any other scholarship.
  • The fellowship will be awarded starting from the time of selection Fellowship in case of awardees already enrolled in a doctoral program, and from the time the awardee enrolls in a recognized doctoral program otherwise.
  • The fellowship will be sanctioned for one year at a time and is renewable annually, based on your satisfactory progress.


About Commissions for Developing Countries (CDC):

Commissions for Developing Countries is a commission of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) and had been established in 2011. At the meeting of the General Assembly in Bangalore 2010 the CDC Terms of Reference were approved and the CDC leadership 2011-2014 was elected, which activated the CDC on 1st January 2011 and led it to hold its first meeting on the 30th and 31st January 2011 in Berlin, Germany. Since the early 1970s, the International Mathematical Union (IMU) has maintained a program of cooperation with and in support of mathematical institutions and individual mathematicians in the developing world. Support activities include research travel and conference grants, as well as volunteer lectures, joint research projects, and donations. For that, CDC became has the mandate to manage all IMU initiatives in support of mathematics in the developing world.
