Opportunity description

The Light Bringer Project and Sci-Fest L.A. invite Writers around the world to participate in the "Women Hold Up Half the Sky Award" competition for feminist science fiction short stories. This award recognizes a science fiction story that embraces feminist themes and has a female protagonist. Selected finalists will be chosen and have their stories read in their honor by celebrity guests during a special performance. All finalists and honorable mentions will be recognized for their work.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

  • Entrants must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Only one (1) submission is accepted per author.
  • Stories must not have any previous publication online or in print, including personal websites and social media.
  • Stories must be original work.
  • All Stories submitted to the Contest must be written in English.
  • The Contest will choose four to six Stories to be Finalists. Each Applicant whose Story is chosen as one of the Finalists will be notified via the email address provided to the Contest of such decision.

PRIZES:

  • First Place: $500 USD and access to a UCLA Extension Writers’ Program sponsored 10-week or shorter online course with the option of three (3) UCLA academic credits.
  • Second Place: $250 USD
  • Third Place: $100 USD

Special Prizes:

  • Print publication in Artemis Journal and other prizes to be announced. 
  • The Finalists’ and Winners’ Stories will be read aloud by well-known actors, including celebrities associated with iconic Sci-Fi TV shows, during a Dramatic Reading.
  • All finalists and honorable mentions will be formally recognized for their work.

About Light Bringer Project:

Light Bringer Project is a nonprofit, Pasadena-based arts organization founded in 1990 by residents who were exploring the historic contributions that artists, architects, and craftsmen made to the local environment. Today, the organization is widely known for its arts and educational programs provided to underserved youth in the greater Pasadena and Los Angeles area. For its arts and learning efforts, the organization has received the League of California Cities’ Helen Putnam Award of Excellence in Public-Private Partnership. As an arts community participant, the organization was given the Gold Crown Award from the Pasadena Arts Council and has received an award of Outstanding Service from the City of Pasadena Arts Commission.
