The Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies at Harvard University offers recent PhD recipients and doctoral candidates the Academy Scholars Program, which identifies and supports outstanding scholars at the start of their careers whose work combines disciplinary excellence in the social sciences or law with a command of the language and history or culture of countries or regions outside of the United States or Canada. This program is a scholarship offered to PhD holders to elucidate some of domestic, comparative, or transnational issues, whether in the past or present. Participants are appointed for a two-year, in-residence, postdoctoral fellowship at The Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Scholars will have to undertake sustained projects of research and acquire accessory training in their chosen fields and areas.
To be eligible to apply for the program, you must fulfill the following requirements:
[1] The Program is open to scholars from all countries and citizenships who have recently completed or are nearing completion of a PhD or equivalent doctoral program in the social sciences or law.
[2] Predoctoral candidates must have finished all field research and be well into the writing stage of their dissertation at the time of application.
[3] The PhD completion date must be within three years of October 1.
[4] Finalists must be available to travel for a personal interview on early December 2018.
Successful applicants will receive an annual stipend of $67,000. If selected before earning the PhD, the Scholars will receive an annual stipend of $31,000 until awarded the Ph.D. This stipend is supplemented by funding for conference and research travel, research assistants, and health insurance coverage. The Harvard Academy will also arrange and pay for travel and hotel accommodations for the finalists to interview in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. Some teaching is permitted but not required. Participants will get the chance to act with Senior Scholars at Harvard University faculty members, who will act as mentors to help them achieve their intellectual potential.

The purpose of the Academy Scholars Program is to identify exceptional scholars who are at the start of their careers and whose work combines excellence in a social science discipline (including history and law) with an in-depth grounding in a particular country or region. Since 1986, the Academy Scholars Program has produced over 130 social scientists and seventeen graduate fellows from a wide variety of social science disciplines with expertise in all non-Western regions. The leadership of The Harvard Academy includes a Chair and a committee of Senior Scholars appointed by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Harvard Academy expenditures are for the support of Academy Scholars, Harvard Academy research projects, and The Harvard Academy’s very modest administrative needs.
