The University of Canterbury is offering scholarships for full-time postgraduate Masters and Ph.D. students who want to complete their postgraduate studies in Civil engineering. The scholarship shall be known as the H J Hopkins Postgraduate Scholarship engineering in memory of Professor H J Hopkins who was Head of the Department of Civil Engineering of the University. The current value of the scholarship is $10,000 per annum, paid in monthly installments.
What Will the Scholars Get?
The university will provide $5000 for a living besides $5000 as a travel grant. The university has the right to terminate the provision of the scholarship even during the school year in a case that the performance of scholars falls below a certain critical standard.
The Regulations:
- The scholarship shall be awarded to a student enrolled for a ME or Ph.D. degree in the Department of Civil and Natural Resources Engineering at the University of Canterbury, and shall be tenable for a period of up to 18 months (for ME) or up to 3 years (for Ph.D.).
- The scholarship shall be awarded annually, subject to there being sufficient funds available in the trust fund, such availability being determined by the Hopkins Lecture Committee.
- The scholarship shall be awarded by the University Council on the recommendation of a Selection Committee comprising a nominee of the Vice-Chancellor, a representative of the Hopkins family, the Dean of Engineering or nominee, the Head of the Department of Civil and Natural Resources Engineering.
- In recommending the award of the scholarship the Committee will consider the applicant's academic record and the potential of the applicant to make a contribution to the field of civil engineering. Each application must, therefore, contain a statement in which the applicant indicates what he or she hopes to contribute to the field of civil engineering in his or her future career. Should there be no suitable candidate in any year, no award shall be made.
- The scholarship may be tenable with a University of Canterbury Masters or Doctoral Scholarship. Candidates will be required to list other awards held or applied for.
- At the conclusion of their tenure, the scholars shall be required to submit a one-page report to the Head of the Department of Civil and Natural Resources Engineering outlining how the scholarship has helped or will help the scholar's work.
