Opportunity description

SBW Berlin offers fully-funded Masters and Undergraduate scholarships for international students for the academic year 2022. The SBW Berlin Scholarship supports young people from abroad who have a financially disadvantaged family background and use the skills they acquire during their studies in Germany to boost long-term non-profit projects, preferably in their home countries.

Benefits

SBW Berlin bears the necessary living expenses of the scholarship holders for the duration of their scholarship. A full scholarship includes:

  • A room in SBW's shared student flats in Berlin.
  • cost-of-living allowance.
  • Tuition fees.
  • Possibly also a travel allowance for the applicant's journey to Berlin before the start of his studies and for the journey home after he has completed his studies.


Eligibility criteria

  • Foreign nationals, whose home countries appear to have a particular need for development assistance.
  • Homeless foreigners.
  • Recognized refugees.
  • Holders of a settlement permit.
  • Holders of an EU long-term residence permit.
  • Holders of a residence permit in accordance with §§ 22, 23 para. 1 or 2, §§ 23a, 25 para. 1 or 2 of the Residence Act (AufenthG) in case of permanent residence in Germany.
  • Holders of a residence permit in accordance with § 25 para. 3, para. 4 sentence 2, or para. 5 of the Residence Act (AufenthG) in case of permanent residence in Germany.
  • Students from EU and EEA countries who have already worked in Germany in an activity related to their studies, before taking up their studies.
  • Students from EU/EEA countries with a permanent right of residence as defined by the Freedom of Movement Act (Freizügigkeitsgesetz EU).
  • Students whose studies in Germany are already being funded by another scholarship are not allowed to apply. 
  • An exception to this rule is assistance under the Federal Education Assistance Act (BAFöG). In this case, the amount of the scholarship is adjusted according to the BAFöG allowance.

Application Requirements:

Applicants must meet the following requirements: 

  • Be between 18 and 30 years old.
  • Average grades correspond with a German grade point average of at least 2.0
  • Application before the start of their university education or fully enrolled in the first, second, or max. third semester at a state-recognized university (in Germany or abroad) or application for a Master’s degree shortly before or after obtaining a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Be able to prove that they have not stayed in Germany for more than 18 months before the application.
  • No first-degree family members who reside permanently in Germany.
  • Intention to work in their country of origin for at least 18 months after graduation.
  • Professional or volunteer experience in the non-profit sector and
  • Be able to prove a relatively low net income.

SBW Berlin supports educational projects all over the world. With SBW Berlin Scholarship, SBW contributes to the international advancement and dissemination of education and knowledge. SBW awards the scholarship to young talents from abroad who have already shown social commitment in their home country. With this scholarship, SBW enables them to achieve a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Germany (Berlin or Potsdam). In special cases, SBW also funds professional training. The scholarship holders then use the knowledge they gain while they study in Germany to support non-profit projects in their home country, often in the education sector. In addition to the SBW Berlin scholarship, SBW also supports educational projects in Bulgaria, India, and Nicaragua.
