Opportunity description

ICO-Retina Research Foundation Helmerich Fellowships provide support for one year of training in any subspecialty to young ophthalmologists from developing countries who are committed to enhancing ophthalmic education and improving patient care in their home countries.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • The applicant must reside in a low-resource country.
  • The applicant must be under 40 years of age at the time of applying.
  • He or she must be a graduate of an ophthalmology residency training program.
  • The specialist exam in ophthalmology must be successfully passed.
  • The applicant must be recommended by the ophthalmology head of a teaching institution or public service hospital in a low-resource country.
  • He or she must be accepted for an ophthalmology subspecialty fellowship, one year in duration, at an advanced ophthalmology training center.
  • The applicant must be reasonably fluent in the language of the fellowship training center.
  • He or she must be committed to returning to a position at a teaching institution or public service hospital in the fellow's home country.
  • The ICO recommends that candidates pass one or more ICO exams. We consider this in the assessment of applications.
  • Applicants from countries with ophthalmologic societies that are Members of the ICO will receive special consideration.

Fellowship Value:

The fellowship award is US$25,000 to cover round trip travel, living expenses, health coverage, liability coverage, and professional expenses.

Fellowship Duration:

The fellowship is one-year long. Applicants are notified by 30 November of the same year. The fellowship is to commence anytime within 15 months after award notification.

The International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) represents and serves professional associations of ophthalmologists throughout the world. ICO works with ophthalmologic societies and others to enhance ophthalmic education and improve access to the highest quality eye care in order to preserve and restore vision for the people of the world. The roots of the ICO date back to 1857 when 150 ophthalmologists from 24 countries convened in Brussels for the first World Ophthalmology Congress. Participants in the Congress founded the ICO in 1927 in Scheveningen, Holland.
