Opportunity description

The University of British Columbia in Canada invites Canadian and international students to apply for the Killam Doctoral Scholarships for 2021, which are a part of the Affiliated Fellowship program. The primary purpose is to support advanced education and research at five Canadian universities and the Canada Council for the Arts. The UBC Killam Doctoral Scholarships are provided annually from the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Fund for Advanced Studies. Killam Doctoral Scholarships are the most prestigious awards available to graduate students at UBC. Approximately 15-20 awards are made each year to the top doctoral candidates in the Affiliated Fellowships competition.

Benefits

Successful applicants receive $30,000 per annum for two years, $2,000 allowance for research-related travel during the 24 months of the scholarship, and tuition fees.

Eligibility criteria

  1. To be eligible to apply for Killam Doctoral Scholarship funding, applicants must have completed no more than 24 months of doctoral study as of the start date of the scholarship. Therefore, applicants to the 2020-2021 competition must have completed no more than 24 months of doctoral study as of 1 September 2020.
  2. Killam Doctoral Scholarships awardees on the UBC-Vancouver campus also become 4-year fellowship holders and receive additional tuition funding from the 4YF program if they are eligible.
  3. Top students in the Affiliated Fellowships-Doctoral award competition are awarded Killam Doctoral Scholarships.
  4. Applicants (such as international students) must submit their application materials to their graduate program. The deadline by which applications for doctoral-level funding must be submitted to the applicant's UBC graduate program is Tuesday, September 17, 2019.
  5. Many of the Affiliated Fellowships have no specific criteria (unrestricted), while many others have some affiliation or special research focus as part of their criteria (criteria-based). All graduate students in the Affiliated Fellowships competition are eligible for unrestricted awards. 
  6. Applicants can be Canadian, permanent resident and international students.
