Opportunity description
Founded by technology entrepreneur and investor Peter Thiel in 2011, the Thiel Fellowship is a two-year program for young people who want to build new things. Thiel Fellows skip or stop out of college to receive a $100,000 grant and support from the Thiel Foundation’s network of founders, investors, and scientists.
What makes Thiel Fellowship different:
- It is a grant, not an equity, so long as the fellows are working, they can use the funds however they want; the Fellowship does not take any ownership stake in the projects.
- It gives the fellows the chance to build their team, whether they need programmers or salespeople, the foundation's network helps everyone in the fellowship to build his team. And since every new business will face common challenges, the foundation provides in-house expertise in engineering, marketing, and design.
- It will help the fellows to get money, the fellowship's network introduces them to investors from the start, and helps them to communicate with those investors so the fellows can get the capital they need on terms of that work.
Eligibility:
Thiel Foundation is offering its two-years fellowship, and a grant of $100,000 for young people who are less than 23 years old. Thiel aims to reach out for people who are seeking to start their new projects away from classrooms. The program includes a series of workshops and meeting with experienced people in order to help you gain the knowledge you need. You will be able to build your own team that will help you build your project. But accepted fellows will have to drop out of college if they are enrolled in one.
Benefits:
The program will provide you with the network you need such as partners and possible customers. It will also provide you with the $100,000 grant which you can use however you want. And will connect you with different investors from the very beginning of your project to make sure you get the support you need.
About Thiel Foundation:
The Thiel Foundation is a private foundation created and funded by billionaire Peter Thiel, co-founder of PayPal and early investor in Facebook. The Thiel Fellowship (originally named 20 under 20) is intended for young visionaries under the age of 20 and offers them a total of $100,000 over two years as well as guidance and other resources to drop out of school and pursue other work, which could involve scientific research, creating a startup, or working on a social movement. Selection for the fellowship is through a competitive annual process, with about 20–25 fellows selected annually. Peter Thiel announced the fellowship at TechCrunch Disrupt in September 2010. The first round of fellows, based on applications made at the end of 2010, was announced in May 2011.
