Opportunity description

The Mahmoud Kahil Award is launching its fifth call for submissions in the areas of editorial cartoons, graphic novels, comic strips, and illustration. Artists from the entire Arab world are encouraged to submit their published work in one of the categories for a chance to win valuable prizes.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Works submitted by Arab Cartoonists, professionals who are residing in an Arab country or abroad.
  • Works that have been published in print or digitally during 2018/2019 in all categories except Graphic Novels which can include works published between 2017-2019.
  • Each artist is allowed up to 3 submissions (in same or different categories).
  • Works that have participated in/won other competitions are allowed to be submitted.
  • Works in all genres and techniques (hand-drawn or using computer software, collages, etc.), studies in black and white or color are accepted and must bear the signature of the artist.
  • A graphic novel is defined as a book format with more than 30 pages of comics.
  • Shortlisted Graphic Novels must be sent full / in low resolution to saci@aub.edu.lb, with the name of the creator, country of origin, scriptwriter, publisher, country and date published

Categories and Requirements According to Each Category:

  • Editorial cartoons: submit 3 samples of your published cartoons.
  • Graphic novels: submit the front and back cover, and 3 pages in high resolution.
    Kindly submit the full graphic novel (low or medium resolution) to saci@aub.edu.lb with your name, title of work, nationality, and publisher. A graphic novel is defined as a book format with more than 30 pages.
  • Comic strips: submit 3 sample strips of your published work, please make sure to submit a title of work, location, publisher, date.
  • Graphic illustrations: submit 3 sample illustrations of your published work (Information graphics are welcome).
  • Children’s book illustrations: submit the Cover and 3 sample pages with the layout.

Rules and Regulation:

  • Forms must be filled in detail and completed
  • Any artwork containing explicitly or implicitly offensive characters or wording that defame, insult, or humiliate any country, religion, culture or public figure will be automatically disqualified.
  • The participant will be solely responsible for any possible copyright issues at any time, prior, during or after this competition.
  • Plagiarized material and imitations will be automatically disqualified and the participant will be barred from this competition or any future one.

Prizes:

  • USD $10,000 in the category of Editorial Cartoons
  • USD $10,000 in the category of Graphic Novels
  • USD $6,000 in the category of Comic Strips
  • USD $5,000 in the category of Graphics Illustrations
  • USD $5,000 in the category of Children’s Book Illustrations
