Opportunity description

The Society of Typographic Aficionados (SOTA) is pleased to announce the 11th annual SOTA Catalyst Award. Each year, SOTA recognizes an individual 25 years of age or younger who shows both achievement and future promise in the field of typography. This award is considered a link between industry and young people who create original works in the fields of typography, type design, lettering, calligraphy, and type history. SOTA encourages any young person active in these fields, whether a professional or a student, to nominate themselves for the SOTA catalyst award.

Eligibility:

  • You must be 25 years of age or younger on December 31st, 2020.
  • Applicants must attend the conference of TypeCon2020 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the USA from August 12th to 16th, 2020, and give a 20-minute presentation of their work on Friday, August 14th.
  • Applications will be judged based on both visual examples as well as the applicant’s interest and aspirations statement.

Funding:

  1. The 2020 winner will be awarded up to $2,000 USD in reimbursement for transportation and lodging expenses to attend the TypeCon2020 conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the USA from August 12th to 16th, 2020. 
  2. They will also have their conference registration paid for and be required to give a 20-minute presentation of their work during the main conference program.
