Opportunity description
Macmillan announces its online competition for the Best First Novel for Mystery Writers which will be held in 2024, and will award prizes at the Edgar Awards in New York City in April 2024.
Benefits
- The winning works will be published by Minotaur Books.
- The winner will receive a payment of $10,000 for the publishing contract they will sign with Minotaur Books on the condition that they accept and implement the terms of the contract proposed by Minotaur Books.
- The winner will be honored at the Edgar Awards ceremony in New York City in April 2024.
- The participant may request reasonable changes to the terms presented in the publishing contract, knowing that Minotaur Books is not obligated to agree to any such changes.
- Minotaur Books may, but will not be required to, consider publishing works submitted by other entrants.
Eligibility criteria
- Any writer, regardless of nationality, can apply for this competition.
- You must be 18 years or older.
- You must not have published any work before, (excluding self-published work, as long as the work shared is not a self-published work) and not under contract with a publisher to publish your novel.
- Both employees and their family members living in the same household, at Minotaur Books or Mystery Writers of America cannot apply for this contest.
- Only one work per participant is allowed.

- Entries must be submitted as Microsoft Word documents or PDF files.
- All posts must be double-spaced, with pages numbered consecutively from beginning to end. All entries must be saved as “Entrant Work Title_Entrant Name”.
- You must have a valid email address.
- Entries must be original works by the author (at least 220 printed pages or approximately 60,000 words) and written in English.
- The submitted work must not infringe any copyright of any third party.
- Winners will be selected by Minotaur Books editors based on the originality, creativity and writing skill of the submitted work.
- The jury's decision on the winners of the competition will be final.
- Notification of the Contest winner, if any, will be attempted by telephone or U.S. mail no later than April 3, 2024. If the winner cannot be contacted, an alternate winner may be selected.
- Contest funds are not permitted to be exchanged or transferred.
