Opportunity description
Instagram announces a job Opportunity as a PhD Research Associate in the USA. You should have a strong research background in core machine learning in at least one of the theories, algorithms, and systems, with a keen interest in solving a product problem through custom, proprietary solutions. Your research background could be in recommender systems or any related research area such as information retrieval.
Duties & responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
- Developing and evaluating scalable deep learning models for recommendation systems.
- Developing and evaluating sequential modeling algorithms and systems.
- Solving product bottlenecks with custom machine learning solutions.
- Collaborating with scientists on new research in the areas of complex systems and reinforcement learning.
- Applying your knowledge of relevant research areas and coding skills to platform and framework development projects.
- Adapting machine learning algorithms and neural networks to best exploit modern parallel environments (e.g. distributed clusters, GPUs, MCUs, etc.).

Eligibility criteria
You must have:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field or in the process of completing it. The degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.
- A PhD in Computer Science or Artificial Intelligence or in the process of completing it. The degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.
- Experience developing machine learning algorithms or machine learning infrastructure in Python, PyTorch, and Slurm.
- Experience in deep learning: supervised, semi-supervised, self-learning, and/or generative modeling.
- Research experience in generative AI (language, image, and video).
- Work permit in the country of employment at the time of employment, and maintain a continuous work permit during employment.
Preferred:
- A track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, and patents, as well as publications in leading workshops, journals, or conferences such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, KDD/ICDM, RecSys, CVPR/ICCV, etc.
- Proven experience in research and software engineering through internships, work experience, coding competitions, or widely used contributions to open source repositories (e.g. GitHub).
- Research background in recommender systems or information retrieval.
- Experience working and communicating across functions in a team.
- Experience solving complex problems and comparing alternative solutions, trade-offs, and diverse perspectives to determine a path forward.
