Opportunity description

Microsoft offers a job opportunity as a Senior Audio Quality Engineer in the United States. The Applied Sciences Group (ASG) is an applied research and development group dedicated to creating the next generation of computer-to-computer interaction technologies. The group’s multidisciplinary team of scientists and developers focuses on the synergy between optics, vision, electronics, artificial intelligence, software, manufacturing technology, materials science, acoustics, and signal processing using other sensory inputs to create new human-computer interfaces. In this role, you will be responsible for leading the end-to-end validation and improvement of audio quality and clarity in order to deliver essential communications features for Windows applications and devices as a Windows Audio Processing Object (APO). You will also design and execute the full validation strategy—from defining new audio metrics and lab setups to authoring automated test scenarios within the company’s continuous integration framework. You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of researchers and engineers, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in audio signal processing and shaping the next generation of superior communications experiences for Windows users.

Duties & responsibilities

You will be responsible for:

  • Design, maintain, and improve objective and subjective audio quality metrics (e.g., psychoacoustic and DSP-based measurements) to validate new features and user experiences.
  • Develop and improve lab setups, including room configurations, test stimuli, and measurement protocols, when current industry standards are inadequate.
  • Plan and execute data collection efforts to build and maintain robust datasets for machine learning training and validation.
  • Conduct code reviews of changes to Voice Clarity APO (C++), identifying potential issues and recommending necessary improvements.
  • Collaborate with a cross-functional team of DSP engineers, machine learning researchers, and software developers to align on technical and quality goals.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies in audio signal processing and machine learning-based optimization, and propose new initiatives to enhance product performance.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to team members, advocating for best practices in audio engineering, data analysis, and automated test transformation.

  • Or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related field and at least 3 years of work experience on a diverse project (e.g., Machine Learning, Natural Language, Digital Signal Processing).
  • Or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related field and at least 1 year of work experience on a diverse project (e.g., Machine Learning, Natural Language, Digital Signal Processing).
  • Or equivalent experience.
  • Hands-on experience with industry-standard audio testing systems and software (e.g., HEAD Acoustics, ACQUA, B&K) and in-depth knowledge of psychoacoustics as applied to audio, voice, or speech quality metrics.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB/Python for automation and data analysis, and demonstrated experience working with or reviewing system-level code (e.g., C++).
  • Experience in or significantly contributing to audio enhancement solutions in a commercial environment.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements. These requirements include, but are not limited to, Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or related field and at least 8 years of work experience in diverse projects (e.g., Machine Learning, Natural Language, Digital Signal Processing).
  • Or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or related field and at least 6 years of work experience in diverse projects (e.g., Machine Learning, Natural Language, Digital Signal Processing).
  • Or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or related field and at least 1 year of work experience in diverse projects (e.g., Machine Learning, Natural Language, Digital Signal Processing).
  • Or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with industry standards such as 3GPP, TIA, IEEE, or certifications such as Skype/Teams.
  • Proficiency in C++.
  • Working knowledge of Windows audio architecture (WASAPI, APOs, device drivers) and relevant debugging tools.
  • Ability to clearly communicate the work you have done, why it is important, and how it is different from other projects.
  • Ability to work in uncharted territory, and have the expertise, creativity, and technical depth to identify technical gaps, capture missing information, align requirements, and choose the right direction.
