Microsoft is announcing an internship opportunity in Machine Translation Research in the United States. Research internships at Microsoft provide a dynamic environment for interns through a network of world-class research labs led by globally recognized scientists and engineers who seek to innovate across a range of scientific and technical disciplines to help solve complex challenges in diverse fields, including computing, healthcare, economics, and the environment. Topics you might explore in this internship include large-scale multilingual models, leveraging large language models, or human and automated evaluation. You will be part of a dynamic team working on a range of different topics and gain experience solving real-world problems, working with leading researchers in the field, and helping to improve the quality of Microsoft products.

Duties & responsibilities

  • Research trainees will apply the mechanisms of inquiry and theory in practice.
  • Research trainees will learn, collaborate, and network for life alongside fellow PhD candidates and some of the world’s best researchers.
  • Research trainees will be paired with mentors during the 12-week training period and will be expected to collaborate with other research trainees and researchers, present their findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community.
  • Trainees will be expected to take on a range of additional responsibilities that may include:
    • Conducting new research to develop cutting-edge techniques in machine translation.
    • Working with the latest tools and models in generative artificial intelligence.
    • Conducting and helping to design experiments to test hypotheses and validate research ideas.
    • Collaborating with your mentor and the team as a whole in day-to-day planning processes.
    • Regularly sharing results with the team, and contributing to publications and patents.

Eligibility criteria

Must have:

  • Currently enrolled in a PhD program in computer science or related field.
  • At least one year of experience in machine translation or natural language processing with hands-on experience in deep learning.
  • Research internships are available in all research areas and are offered year-round, although they typically begin in the summer.
  • Research interns must be physically present at their manager’s Microsoft site for the duration of their internship.
  • Algorithmic problem-solving and software development skills in Python, C/C++, or other.
  • Experience with open source machine learning tools such as PyTorch or other.
  • A track record of publications at relevant MT, NLP, or ML conferences, e.g. ACL, NAACL, EMNLP, WMT, ICML, NeurIPS, etc.

  • The base pay range for this internship is $6,550 to $12,880 per month, but may vary by location, within the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City Metropolitan Area, the base pay range for this role in those locations is $8,480 to $13,920 per month.
